boomerang

last term we were learning about the aboriginal culture and migration and how they would use boomerangs and what they would use them for like hunting, playing and practising with them. On the first week back at school for term 3 we finished this topic of by designing a boomerang, we were meant to make the boomerang have meaning to it and incorporate the traditional patterns to do this we had to do a bit of research. On the 3rd and final day of doing these, we through the boomerangs and tested how far they would go and how good they would actually work considering that they aren't proper boomerangs the ones we had were just flat and they weren't rounded so they wouldn't come directly back, but they did do a little spin back. I don't know the meaning of mine but it looks good and I added kangaroos a sunset and a shadowed land thing.

copper into silver and gold

Turning copper into silver and gold 🥈🥇

Aim:  To make a coin turn into silver and gold.
Equipment: Bunsen burner, Tripod, Heat mat, Beaker, Gauze mat, Copper Coin, Scissor Tongs, wire wool, tweezers, 100mls of sodium hydroxide solution, 5grams powdered zinc, Beaker with water, paper towels

Method:
  1. Place a copper coin on the table and use some wire wool to clean the copper coin off.
  2. Next, get the sodium hydroxide and powdered Zinc to create sodium zincate. Pour the zinc powder into sodium hydroxide and stir.
  3. place the beaker onto of tripod and gauze mat then turn on your Bunsen burner.
  4. Heat the solution till it at boiling point.
  5. Take the Bunsen out from under while there's still some zinc left in the bottom of the beaker.
  6. Pop the coin into the solution so its in contact with the zinc at the bottom.
  7. take the coin out after a few minutes.
  8. Rinse the coin off into some cold water.
  9. Dab the coin dry, take off any lumps of zinc (By now it should be silver)
  10. Put the coin in the top part of Bunsen burner flame and very gently heat it. (Now it will be gold)
Try 1
Notes: Need to take all the zinc sulfate off.
(Last time I didn't take it all off)
Try 2
Notes: I did it and I finished it.
Observation:

Dissociation:
While doing this I found it fun and interesting because you were turning a 10c copper coin into silver and then gold if you wanted to. When I was setting the experiment up I found that you had to be very specific with what chemicals you had to use (with all experiment you have to be specific but with this one I found you had to be extra careful), in the equipment I wrote down Sodium hydroxide solution but I didn't say how strong the concentration had to be. When I went and showed the teacher he said I had to do some more research into the chemical and find out what concentration it was. I couldn't find it so the teacher just gave me a medium concentration and it worked out fine for the experiment. During the experiment, I found it fun to watch the coin turn from copper to silver, even though you can't really see it happening because the solution you mix is all black/grey and you can't see through it. Once you take it out you can see the silver. When washing it and drying it off the first time doing the experiment I didn't take all the sodium zincate off and it burnt and rusted over top of the flame when turning it to the gold. The next day I did the whole experiment again to get it right so I had a good looking coin. This time I made sure to wash all the sodium zincate off and didn't keep it over top of the flame too long.

Evaluation:
If you are wanting to do this experiment then I would really recommend doing more than 1 coin so you can get at least one good looking on and you don't have to the experiment more than once, I would say to do at least 6-8 coins and maybe keep some silver as well so you have some silver and some gold. You also want to make sure you get all the sodium zincate off so you don't burn and rust your coin. I think this is defiantly an experiment I would want to do again and if I did do it I would make sure the sodium zincate is off and it is cleaned properly.

Alloys
Alloys are a mixture of two or more elements one or more of which is a metal. Alloys are usually harder than the metal they contain.

Another world:Diversity

In English so far we have been learning about "Another world" meaning we have been learning from two different perspectives and how two peoples lives can be so different but we can all be faced with similar challenges. We have been learning how to deal with these if they were our challengers and if they were someone else's challenges. The way we are learning about these is through movies, TV shows and books. We watched Zootopia, Tarzan, The last air bender, glee and we read Children of blood and bone. We have learnt many things so far this year and some of the thing we have learnt have changed my perspective for many things in life. Like not to judge someone of the first interaction you have with them because they might be going through something at that time and or maybe having a bad day. It has shown me to be more kind and it has changed my understanding of people and the way I think/ act. Now in term 3 we are starting to learn about diversity and what it means and what it means to us, or what we think it means. To me diversity is about accepting and understanding others and that not everyone is the same, and everyone is an individual and unique.

Children of blood and bone

Write that essay:
Essay Question: Describe at least one memorable idea in the text.
Explain how the text helped you to understand this idea.
There are two sides to every story.

Essay:
Do you think there is always two sides to every story? Children of blood and bone
by Tomi Adeyemi, A memorable idea is that there are two sides to every story.
This idea is shown in chapter 39- Inan, Inan uses his magic to see what happened
to his mother, chapter 13-Zelie, Amari tells Zelie “ my father killed my best friend
and in chapter 22- Amari, Amari remembers not being allowed to leave the
palace.

The idea that there are two sides to every story is shown in chapter 39-Inan,
Inan uses his magic to see what happened to Zelie’s mother When he finds out
what happened he realizes that Zelie’s memories were nothing like the stories
his father had told him as a child and they weren't the villains his father had told
him about. Instead, all he saw were the families his father tore apart.
This chapter shows that just because one person says or tells you something
it doesn't mean it is always true or should be true. You could comper this to the
real world when someone in school tells you something bad that someone else
had said about you and you go and ask them about it but it wasn't true.
I think you should always know both parts of the story before you go and do
something about it because you might say or do something you regret.

We also see this in chapter 13- Zelie, Where Amari tells Zelie
“ my father killed my best friend”. From Zelie’s point of view, this would sound
terrible because she wasn't there to see what happened, but either way, it is bad.
If you look at it from Amari’s view it is still bad maybe even worse because her
dad knew that they were best friends, but Amari knew the whole story and
knew what had happened even though her dad shouldn’t have done it.
Then there is Amari’s father that would have thought it was the right thing to do
and he was doing something good for his home because if Binta
(Amari’s best friend) was to be let go she would have had some of her power
back and he wouldn’t have known what she would have done with them.
If she was going to strike back or stay the same and do nothing about having
them back. He probably thought it was the right thing to do because then he
wasn’t putting any of his family at risk but either way he shouldn’t have done it.
This could be linked back to real life where someone might do something bad
and think that they are doing good and that they are helping their family or their
friends when really they have not to help and maybe even made worse.

Another idea is that in chapter 22-Amari, Amari remembers not being allowed to
leave the palace because of what stories she was told and what her father had
told her. In this chapter, I think Amari remembers this because of all the things
she is starting to realize she missed out on because she listened to those stories
and what her father had said. Her father would have told her these stories
because he wanted to keep her safe and out of harm's way because with his
other family, he was more relaxed and worried less about keeping them safe and
more on letting them have fun and because of this it got them all killed. Now that
Amari is out of the palace and looking around for the first time, she probably
thinks that her father only wanted to keep her locked up or something like that.
You can see this type of thing happen in everyday life when someone tells you
not to do something and you listen but when you finally decide not to you find
that it is actually nice or it might not be but it doesn’t matter because you found
out for yourself, instead of just going by someone's word. I think that even if
someone tells you not to do something you should at least try it out for yourself
because you might like it and have different experiences. Even if it does turn out
bad at least you know that you did it and found out for yourself.

Even though one person says something does not always mean it is true. Sometimes you have to find things out for yourself whether it is good or bad.
Just like most of the characters in the book, they were told one thing and it didn't
turn out to be all true.

My food bag

In cook this term we have been learning about special requirements for people and what we could substitute out if they had food requirements. We also had to choose or make someone up and do profiling about them and what they could eat and what they couldn't eat. I just made someone up, the person I did was a female in her 25-30s, she was a CrossFit trainer and loved going to the gym in her own time because of this I had to come up with a meal that was healthy and something that would give her enough energy to go throughout the day. Instead of planning out a whole day worth of meals we just had to make either breakfast, lunch or dinner. I choose to do breakfast and I made a berry smoothie and some french toast. When making the first version we made a few mistakes and we weren't ready, because of this we didn't get 10/10 for everything. On our 2nd attempt the next week we add more of the greek yoghurt to the smoothie and that made the smoothie taste better. For the french toast, we made sure that is was served straight away when taken out of the pan. With this being our last try we were very pleased with the results and we were happy with how it tasted. I choose these recipes to do because they were something that I liked and something that seemed fast and easy. I also knew that they would be able to be made in 1 hour. While doing this I learnt that there are more food requirements that I thought there was and that it was harder than I thought to make my recipes vegan or vegetarian.
